Roof of the Duomo

Travel Tuesday: Milan

Roof of the Duomo

Lately, I've been getting a lot of messages asking about my trip to Italy, all thanks to this amazing $400 airfare deal to Milan. With so many friends looking for suggestions, I figured that (a whopping three years later) it was finally time to write a few posts. So for the next few weeks, I'll be recapping some of my favorite sights and bites from Venice, Rome, the Amalfi Coast and — first up — Milan.

Duomo di Milano

SEE

With just an afternoon in Milan, I only had time to hit up the major landmarks. Our first destination was the Galleria, the city's famous glass-covered mall. It's a stunning enclosed plaza with arched iron-vaulted domes and plenty of high-end stores, perfect for some shopping and people-watching. Just a quick stroll away is the Duomo, one of the largest cathedrals in Italy. You can walk up to the top and it's definitely worth the trip — once on the roof, you'll get some gorgeous aerial views of Milan.

EAT

Luini

Panzarotto

Panzarotto

I probably ate my weight in gelato while traveling through Italy and Milan is certainly a good place to get started. Grab a scoop (or two) from Il Massimo Del Gelato, known for its multiple spins on chocolate (infused with rum, cinnamon, etc.) and seasonal sorbets. For a savory snack, swing by Luini near the Duomo, which specializes in panzerotti, a fried pastry that feels like a cross between zeppole and pizza. The doughy treat comes in a few flavors, but my favorite was the classic combo of tomato sauce and mozzarella.

Next up, Venice!
